How to properly fit a Disposable Face Mask

The price & quality of your face mask will not matter one bit if it does not cover your face properly. That’s why the proper fit of a disposable face mask is crucial to ensure that you get the highest level of protection against a host of dangerous germs, fumes, pollen, and so on.

Even the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) has stressed the need for a proper fit. Ideally, a surgical face mask must be tightly fit against your face to make sure that you & even the other people are properly protected. A lot of people think that a mask provides protection only for the wearer. But in reality, it offers protection for both the wearer as well as other people around you.

A Quick Hack for better Fit

One of the easiest ways to ensure a better fit is by tucking the sides of your mask while also trying knots on the mask’s ear loops. This trick can be used on all surgical masks (2-Ply & 3-Ply) to ensure that a proper fit for the mask.

Basically, a disposable face mask works as a barrier between you and the environment. But if you do not know how to use the mask or it doesn’t even fit well, it means that you start to inhale & exhale without the protection of the mask. Since there will be no barrier left between you and the environment, there is a chance that germs or some other dangerous material can enter your system through respiration & cause health problems.

How to properly fit a Disposable Face Mask

Depending on the type & brand of face mask, the actual guideline to ensure a proper fit can be different. In fact, it can even differ from person to person! We have listed some of the steps which you can take to get a proper fit:

1. Side Gaps

You need to make sure that there are no side gaps when you are tweaking a disposable mask. Ideally, a face mask must cover the side of your cheeks, nose, mouth & your chin. Use your finger to check if you can fit it in the sides of the disposable mask. If you can slide a finger through the mask, it means that it is not tight enough.

You can fold the disposable mask in half and then tie a knot in both ears loops while ensuring that you also tuck the sides into it.

2. Airflow

Pay attention to how the air feels while you are wearing a mask. Do you feel the warm air inside the disposable mask? Do you feel cool air? Ideally, you should feel warm air. But if you are feeling cold air, it means there are gaps or your disposable mask doesn’t have enough layers.

To solve this problem, refer back to step 1, which tells how to eliminate any side gaps. If the problem still persists, you may need to wear two masks.

3. Smell

Try to smell a strong scent without the mask. Then put on your mask and smell once again – If the smell feels dampened or less intense, then it means that your mask is doing the job. If you feel no difference, then try using a mask with enough layers.

Wearing a face mask will help to prevent the spread of Covid. But that alone is not enough. You need to make sure your mask fits snugly on your face as you breathe in and out.
